Travelport Digital hosts Coderdojo Coolest Projects appathon

On the 25th March 2017 50 volunteers descended on Travelport HQ in Dublin’s city centre to take part in the CoderDojo Coolest Projects appathon.

The event brought together app developers of all ages with particular skillsets including UI and design or experience building iOS apps using Swift or Android apps using Java.  There was a great mix of people including kids from CoderDojo, Coolest Projects Mentors, developers and designers from Travelport Digital and developers from Liberty IT.

Everyone was gathered on a sunny Saturday for one great cause - to build an app for the digital treasure hunt that will be taking place at the Coolest Projects event in the RDS, Dublin on Saturday 17th June 2017.

The goal of the app is to enable people to interact with the event throughout the entire day. Bluetooth wireless beacons will be hidden throughout the RDS for attendees to find using the app. When the app comes into the range of the beacon something magical will happen. What exactly that magic was is where the Appathon came in!

The energy on the day was fantastic with the group broken up into three teams:

  1. The ideas team - who were to come up with the fun things that could happen when you interact with the beacons
  2. The coins team - who were tasked with developing a way to collect points every time someone interacted with the beacon
  3. The Beacons team - who developed how the apps connected to the beacons and how they should be configured.

The teams worked together for two hours, broke for lunch and presented the ideas they came up with to the entire group. Feedback was given and they went back to tweak and fine tune. A few hours later the groups presented again whilst munching on some well deserved pizzas!

The final session brought the teams together to see how everything would integrate. Teams then voted for the person they thought contributed the most within their teams with prizes awarded to the top 4 contributors, the winners included:

  • Alessandro Marrone - Android Developer with Travelport Digital
  • Robert Kavanagh - Developer, Liberty IT
  • Oisin O’Sullivan - CoderDojo student
  • Jake O’Toole - Coderdojo student

The appathon was a huge success. After a full day of workshops and presenting the final outcome was some screens of the app fully coded and some funky designs. The team will be getting together again in a few weeks time to pull the rest of it together in advance of the June event.
