Global Traveler Survey reveals the future of travel is digital

Travelport have released the findings from the latest Global Traveler Survey, uncovering insights and stories about the modern day traveler. The research, conducted in August 2017, surveyed 11,000 people across 19 countries globally who had taken at least one return flight last year.

It examined how people research and book trips, the role of technology used in travel, the use of mobile including mobile payments in the travel lifecycle and the differences by traveler type, age and country.

The findings show that travelers are becoming increasingly digitally dependent when it comes to planning, booking and experiencing travel and that emerging technologies that will play an increasingly important role in future travel, such as voice search. This demonstrates that it doesn’t matter what age you are or whichever continent you live in, providing relevant and timely digital tools is no longer an accessory but has now become an essential means of reaching travelers from the minute they search until the moment they return from their trip.

Some highlights from the global report reveal:

  • Booking trips by smartphones varies widely from the highest level in Indonesia at 68% and the lowest in UK at 17%
  • 76% of South Africans would feel lost without their smartphones compared to a global average of 60%
  • Indian travelers use smartphones from booking a trip to boarding a plane with 82% agreeing that using boarding passes makes traveling easier
  • China’s travelers topped the charts for being the biggest app-users with an average of 20 such services used during each trip – France and Japan are the world leaders for booking by computer at 87%

The report also includes the world’s first Digital Traveler Rankings, a league table that shows who are the most, and the least, digitally dependent among all the nations surveyed. It combines the main indicators of digital usage by travelers in each country, reflecting overall smartphone, fixed-line and mobile internet penetration levels locally.
